    Reps. Becerra and Weldon:

I am writing to express my support for HR 977, the legislation to ban the patenting of genes. This is a vital issue for patient rights and medical costs in the twenty-first century.

Studies show that gene patents slow the pace of medical research and hugely raise the cost of patient care: for breast cancer genes, a test that should cost $30 instead costs $3,000, and the woman must donate her tissues for research as well. Gene patents have been used to halt research, and to limit medical testing. Patients cannot even be told what genes are in their own bodies-because someone owns the patent on them!

I urge quick action by Congress on this matter affecting all Americans.

    Sincerely,

    Cc:
